Tenant Cows

With only 2 goats at the start, we had plenty of extra pasture land available that would quickly become overgrown and need to be regularly mowed if it wasn’t grazed.

Luckily, a neighbor was looking for additional pasture space for 3 of his cows for over the summer months. We agreed to a basic pasture lease arrangement where his cows were grazing on our pastures. He also provided assistance with our goats and answered many of our farm-related questions. He came by every day to check on the cows and was an excellent resource for pasture management techniques.

We had the 3 tenant cows for the summer. Their names are Gabby, Lily and Sunshine. Gabby and Lily are hereford / red angus crosses and Sunshine is a hereford. They were all juvenile cows that will soon be used for breeding additional cattle.

They were very friendly cows and would often come over close to the fence to see us. They would also follow us around if walked around the pasture.

The cows recently headed back home for breeding. We will miss them and it is already quieter without their moos in the fields.

We are already planning to arrange for a few cows to come for a visit next summer.

    • The cows were borrowing part of our pasture for the summer. They went back to their home farm for breeding and they will stay there at their home farm now.

Next summer we might have a different set of cows as the cows that were on our pasture will be raising their calves next year at their home farm.
